Scroll back to 1977 and Marvel Comics were preparing to publish a full-colour, super special comic book featuring rock band, Kiss, as superheroes.

But this was to be no ordinary print run. And Kiss is no ordinary rock band …

Blood was taken from each band member by a registered nurse at Nassau Coliseum, New York, during a concert stop-over. The event was witnessed by a public notary.

The band travelled to Marvel’s Borden Ink Plant in Depew, New York where they added the phials of blood to a drum of red ink which was then used to print the first issue of the Kiss comic. Again, a public official certified authenticity.

The result? Kiss’s marketing stunt was a success and the comics flew off the shelves.
